This is one of the largest and most sumptuous domus in the southern quarte
r of Herculaneum. The strong slope of the ground and the desire for a view of the gulf induced the owner to follow a highly unusual plan, so that the rooms are set on two different levels, linked together by a staircase. The rooms facing onto the \b \cf1 \ATXht16 peristyle\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 are decorated in a particularly sumptuous manner, and the marble decoration of the floor and walls in the largest of them is the most luxurious ever to have been found in a Roman dwelling. The house takes its name from
the relief in the neo-Attic style depicting the myth of Telephus that was found in one of the small rooms preceding this hall during the excavations.
